Poetry and You... Perfect Together
In class this week, we discussed the fact that connotation is the language of poetry. In essence, that means that each poem has its own personal meaning, both to the poet and to the reader. Sometimes, when all goes well, those meanings intersect, and the reader finds a poem he can relate to almost as much as if he wrote it himself.
Your mission today is to find two poems whose connotations you can understand, appreciate, and enjoy. Below you will find the links to several web sites where you can search for poetry. When you find your poems, copy and paste them into Word and print out a copy for yourself. (You will need them in class tomorrow.)
Next, post a comment to my blog that tells me which two poems you chose and why you chose them. Think about what the poem says and how it relates to your life. Does it touch your emotions? Does it amuse you in some way? What images does the poet use that clarify the subject or mood of the poem? Does the poem use any "musical language" that is appealing to the ear? You can address any or all of these things in your comment, which should be at least 100 words. And please... remember to proofread before you post.

The first poem i chose was number four on the love poems and quotes website. I feel connected to this poem at only this point in my life. I am in a very good relationship and sometimes i do not know how to say how im feeling toward him. If i were to, this poem says it all. The words that are used in this poem are very strong. Maybe to strong for a teenage relationship, but i have been through alot and my boyfriend is the closest thing i have to real "love", so that's why this poem fits the way i feel about him. The next poem i have chosen is called " Never under estimate a girl". I feel like i have a big connection with this poem. I take it as it is written toward a guy. Guys are always doing this. They think they are better than girls, they think they can tell us what to do and even when to do it. When reality finally hits them, they will realize that girls do were the pants. I have had this conversation with many of my close friends and even my boyfriend. Iv'e alwyas felt this way and i always will.
The first poem that I picked was a poem called Happy Face by dmm4u06 from Phoenix,IL. It was a poem about being happy and to always be yourself. The second poem that I picked was called Spider by Doug-e-efre$h from Mission Hills, CA. I really liked this poem because, I am absolutely terrified of spiders and this author seems to share my fear of them. I found both poems on http://www.teenink.com/.
The first poem I used No you cannot from teenink.com. I chose this one becasue I feel like everyone is so neggative in the world. Once one person stands up for themselves and what they believe in someone comes along and shoots them down. If everyone says "yes we can" believing in a change than why doesnt everyone stand up and go for what they want without any worries. The second one I chose is Never under Esimate a Grl because I feel like every girl can relate to this. Most girls when they get into a relationship they always let the boys control or are afraid to take control. But, I believe every girl should step up and wear the pants like they say. But at the same time dont take it to far where your one of those crazy girls that he breaks up with. I think alot of guys dont give girls or society at that give girls enough credit than they should. They just classify them as being in the kitchen all day when in reality if that is what your respective other does than so be it because you wouldn't be having that warm meal on the table every night you'd be taking out that frozen dinner and popping it in the microwave. More girls should stand up for themselves and put there foot down and not let people walk all over them.
The first poem I chose was number 64 on the love poems website. It is called If There's... by John Ragland. I chose this poem because I have been in a relation ship with the same guy for about three years now, and to this day, this poem decribes how i feel when i see him, talk to him, and think about him. I feel love is very important and a majority of poems are probably written about love. The second poem I chose is called Friends. It was written by jean Kyler McManus. It is the shortest but best friendship poem I have ever read. I belive that friendship is actually the absoulte most important thing when it comes to a relationship because a relationship, whether it be a love relationship, family relationship, or any other relationsip, you need friendship to start off, to gain trust and respect. Then maybe you can build a stronger relationship from there.
The two poems I chose are both love poems. One is called Key To my Heart by Marsha Hoyt. The other doesn’t have a title or an author. I chose those poems because they remind me of my boyfriend. Especially the one by Marsha Hoyt. It relates to how I felt before I met him. The second poem reminds me of how happy he and I are together. Both poets have a very happy mood and they put images in your head of a happy couple. Also both poems have a very good rhythm to them. They are easy to read and the words just flow when you read it.
The first poem I chose was “When I am Dead”, I’m not sure if anyone else thinks about death like I do. I guess I just don’t want to be forgotten, I don’t want to just be in the ground rotting away and everyone else couldn’t tell you who I was. I like this poem because it’s saying not to dwell or hurt because I have passed on but to embrace it and remember me for the great things I have done. The second poem I chose was a poem called “The Journey”. I really enjoyed that poem because it says to just, take it all in and don’t go wishing you’re life away. I’m a firm believer in living life for the little things, the happiness and the sadness and everything in between your start and your finish.
I chose “I Am From” for my first poem. It makes me think of childhood and rainy afternoons spent contemplating life. It makes me remember who what life is about. It’s sweet and thought provoking. It reminds me of all the things I did when I was younger, like playing with dolls or imaginary friends. My second poem, “If I Were in Charge of the World” is just funny. If I ruled the world, this would be how I did it, mostly. The flip flop things caught my eye because if I could, I’d wear flip flops forever. I like this person’s almost childlike outlook on the way the world should go.
Coincidentally, I went to the first website given, typed in “poem #56” and got a poem called “Fat Is Not a Fairy Tale” by Jane Yolen. I immediately burst into laughter at the irony. I guess you could say I connected with this poem. It basically says that people need to accept others for who they are, particularly over-weight people. I came to terms with being over-weight a long time ago, and I admire this author for this poem’s message. I read a couple more, and found one that told a story very clearly. It was very interesting and I enjoyed it. It was “Bike Ride With Older Boys” by Laura Kasischke. She described how when she was very young, some older boys asked her on a bike ride and she didn’t go. She described how she knew what their intentions were. It was really interesting. However, I wouldn’t consider it poetry. It didn’t rhyme and it wasn’t organized. It just looked like she was rambling.
Both poems I chose were love poems, one was titled name and the other did not have a title. Both poems I chose expresses how I feel about a certain someone in my life. They express the love and care I have for this special someone. These poems are cute and simple. They are not technical and difficult to read like most. They are simply sweet and short. I love reading simple and clear poems like these.
I chose Cartoon Physics, Part 1 and an anonymous love poem. I chose the cartoon physics poem because it made me laugh, and I like the melancholy way in which the poem is presented. Even though cartoon physics are impossible it all makes perfect sense through the eyes of an innocent child, whose dreams and fantasies haven’t yet been tainted by harsh reality. The second, the love poem, was very simple but it rang true to me. There were no hooks or perfect lines, it just said simply stated "I love you" and that we’re perfect together, I normally don't go for this type of poem but I can really relate to the poet's feelings. In a much less romantic way than I’d normally try to express it describes perfectly the love my girlfriend and I share.
The first poem I chose are "At the Un-National Monument Along the Candadian Border" by William Stafford. I chose this poem, because its interesting. He writes about something that means nothing. I like how he turned it around. Normally people write about monuments, statues, or historic places. He's going beyond the normal, and gives meaning to nothing. Who cares about a random field that nobody knows, because nothing important happened there?
The other poem I chose is called "Student Theme" by Ronald Wallace. I liked this poem because it was very creative how he took the different structures of grammar and personified them.
The first poem I chose was "The Bat". It described a bat in a creepy manner. Though the poem made it sound disgusting and ugly, there was a sense of misunderstanding that the bat isn't that bad. The second poem I chose was called "Eagle Plain". It discussed that the American Eagle doesn't know he's a patriotic symbol. It seemed like there is symbolism. Like the author isn't really talking about an eagle. It was really well written.
