Establishing Your Voice: Books
In class we have talked about books that were so engrossing that they made you forget where you were. A good writer hooks a reader and sometimes just refuses to let go. Think about a book you have read that grabbed your attention and didn't let go. It can be a book you read recently or one from long ago. In about 100 words (that's a nice meaty paragraph), tell the class about that book and why you enjoyed it so much. As you write your paragraph, try to hook the interest of your classmates so that some of them might want to read this book as well.

The best book I've ever read? Not going to lie, it's really difficult to choose just one. I've read so many books I couldn't even remember all the names of them. And once I'm into a book, I can never put it down anyway. I think "Impulse" by Ellen Hopkins wins, though. It’s an amazing book. It is about these three kids who all end up in a mental institute because they tried to kill themselves. It’s written in verse so the pages go by really quickly. Her characters are very real and easy to connect to. The ending is so sad it made me want to cry. But in my opinion, that is a good book. A good book should make you feel the way the characters do and “Impulse” achieves that.
My favorite book is the princesses of bamarre. Its not a well know book and it’s created off of a rymric from medieval England. The story consists of fantasy and adventure. The main characters of the story are Addie and myrle. They are two sisters that live in a far off kingdom. They are as different as night and day. Myrle is fearless and courageous while Addie is shy and fearful. Myrle is struck down by the gray death and has a short time to live. Princesses Addie is forced to go seek the cure for this foe. Along the way she has to fight ogres, dragons, and her own fearful self. She finds love and saves her sister but not in the way you would expect. This book is completely fantasy but as you read through you’ll become one of the characters and experience the wonder of the story.
One of my favorite books is “Feed” by M.T. Anderson. I enjoy this book because it is probably one of the most amazing things I have ever read, it’s character’s and story line are just awesome. It doesn’t look like it would be a traditional love story, but “Feed” is one of the best underrated love stories of all time. It is told from the vantage point of Titus, an average teen in a distant future, yet he faces the same problems we do. Fitting in with friends, finding and keeping his girlfriend, and going into “mal” with his friends; yet Titus has to deal with his girlfriend dying. I love this book because it describes beautifully how he feels, as if he were feeling for the first time for this girl, and the end nearly kills me every time I read it which has been about three or four times. Well, that’s about it, if you’re interested then you should read it
I haven't read too many books, mainly because none of them seem to catch my attention. I've read a lot in class but hardly ever on my own. The ones that I remember the best, that I enjoyed the most is a toss up. Its between, "Swear to Howdy", "The Great Gatsby", "Catcher in the Rye", or "Touching Spirit Bear." I like them because i can relate to them, except the Great Gatsby, I just like the story line, with the whole mystery thing. Swear to Howdy had to have been my favorite. I'll write about it in my next blog.
I HATE reading, but there is one book that hooked me in like no other.
"Do You Know The Monkey Man"? was most the best book i have ever read. This is a mysterious book, that really makes you think and want to know what's going to happen next. How would you feel if someone said to you..."My sister drowned when she was young, but i tonight i got a phone call from her". These were the words that attracted my eyes to this book. Just place yourslef in that girl's position. I never read, and i dont even understand what attracted my eyes to the cover of this book. Maybe it was the title. Looking at the title i said to myself, "who is the monkey man"?. My first inpression of the book was that it sounded stupid and silly but then i read the preview and i knew it was going to suck me in. This book, is what inspired me to be an author when i am older. I want to be able to get the teenagers that dont like to read, attached to a book, because once you find one book that hooks you in, you tend to give more books a chance. Take this book out of the library you won't regret it.
My all time favorite book as of right now is Catcher in the Rye. I loved how real the character of Holden Caufield seemed to me. I felt as though I was listening to Holden speak directly to me, as his therapist. There was not a lot of flowery language or unrealistic happenings, the story really just jumped of the page for me. I can completely understand why The Catcher in the Rye is considered one of the all time literary classics of the 20th century. I can relate to Holden in finding a general distaste for human behavior, and finding far to many people to be "phony."
Well, I don't really like reading any kind of books but out of the few that I have read I would say You Maybe was my favorite. It was based on a typical two highschools kids that have relationship problems and go through alot. I like this book because people my age, teenagers can relate to.I believe that covers can also attract you to the book just like this book did. Yes, they say to not judge a book by its cover but sometimes people do. Since im not really into books I thought that it would take me a while to read but I finished it in two days. It was one of those "can't put it down books." In the end I was mad about how the situation turned out with the guy and girl to say the least. It was well written and one of those books where it was really good during the book and you think that something good will happen at the end but it doesnt. Besides that, I would still recommend it to someone.
My love life has been a bit... unique over the past few years. So for me to find a book that depicts it almost perfectly was a huge surprise. When I picked up Keeping You a Secret by Julie Anne Peters I expected it to be another stupid teen novel about a sappy relationship. You know how those are. Well, to my surprise it was completely different. As I read Keeping You a Secret I was shocked and felt as though I was reading a narrative that I had written myself. I could not put it down. Towards the end of the novel it seemed to get a little eccentric, but overall I loved it. I'm not sure how much other people would care for Keeping You a Secret. Society seems to be too judgemental to appreciate books like this. However, it remains one of my favorites.
The book Breaking Dawn which is in the Twilight series kept my attention throughout the whole book. The book was very vivid. While reading it I was able to picture Bella and Edwards wedding, how beautiful it was. The author went into so much detail you could picture the whole wedding scene. While reading I kept thinking what is going to happen next. While they were on their honeymoon Bella found out she was pregnant. When I was reading it I didn’t know what was going to happen, Bella wanted to keep the baby but it was too dangerous and she did the thing no one would picture that she would do. She calls Rosalie, Edwards’s sister who never really liked her. Throughout the book the author describes what Bella goes through during her very painful pregnancy and you can imagine the pain that Edward is going through. When I was reading this book I didn’t want to put it down because the way the author wrote it was so good. I was able to picture the scenes in the story; I think the best part was when Bella had her baby and the way the author went into detail on the growth of her daughter, on how fast she was growing. I think if you’ve read this book you would think it is one of the best books and if you haven’t read it you should read the series.

The books that really hook me in are the Kingdom Keeper books. They are about five teenagers who are chosen to be holographic hosts for Disney World. This makes them characters as well as humans. The reason they were chosen, not only to host, but to help Disney Imagineers (employees) defeat the villains who are trying to take over. It may sound childish but it is written for young adults and goes into great detail. When the kids go to sleep, they are brought to Disney World but in their holographic state. At night, they see characters from the pirates for Pirates of The Caribbean, to Maleficent. There's even a scene where Maleficent puts a spell on the "It's A Small World" dolls to attack the characters. They sing the annoying song as they swim to the characters, biting their legs and arms with a happy smile. According to the book, that's why the ride was under renovation a couple of years ago. It's a really fun book if you have been to Disney and/or are planning to revisit. It really makes you pay attention to things you may not notice whilst in the parks. It talks a lot, in depth, about how the park was created and why. The best thing is, the first book, takes place at night so it just adds to the mysteriousness. The second book takes place in Animal Kingdom and it is just as fun with even more adventure. It's "The da Vinci Code" of Disney.
The best book series I have read so far is "Cirque Due Freak", The book was about a young boy that got turned into a half vampire to become a vampires assistent while trying to save his friend, then later on acuses him for stealing his spot in the vampire world. The writer of the book is Darren Shan, The main character is also
Darren shan, the suppously its his life that occuring in the book.
When first reading the book.it starts of off with him telling a story about his childhood, then he tries to explain that every thing that happens in the realy happened to him in life, It grabs you in by starting at the most random point like in his case th toilet.
About two summers ago I read a book called 'Winkie' by Clifford Chase. It's the tale of a Teddy Bear named Winkie who one day, out of desire, loneliness, and boredom, comes to life and leaves the house of the family he has belonged to for many years. It chronicles his journey through parenthood, loss, finding himself, and even being convicted of over nine-thousand counts of terrorism, treason, teaching evolution, being a witch, and 'corrupting the youth of Athens'. While it might be a commentary on the American Judicial system, it is also a story about life; the life of a character that is made of stuffing and cloth.
This is a book I hold close to my heart, because beneath the satire, it tells Winkie's life story. Winkie is described as 'a strange bear, but a good bear'. He is lost, this little bear, travelling all the way back through his memory in the book to find himself. He suffers through so much in the book, yet the entire time all he is trying to do is figure out how he came to be. Winkie is a character that craves love, and during the flashbacks of his life as the Chase family Teddy Bear, he goes through long stretches of love, then loneliness as the children forget about him. In the end, this book is about finding someone who cares about you, finding who you are, and where you might fit in the world.
I really love to read and I have read a lot of books that have grabbed my attention. I can’t remember all of them but a book I read recently that I couldn’t put down was the last book of the Twilight series, Breaking Dawn. I love this book because the author, Stephanie Miller is very descriptive. I love being able to picture everything so clearly in my head while I read. Every single part of that book I was thinking to myself, “wow how are they going to do that in the movie!” The books are always better than the movie because they cannot put everything in the movie that is in the book and I always feel they leave an important part out that should have been in the movie. I think by the time they get to the third Twilight book they need to make the movie into more than one part.
Since I hate reading so much I could honestly say the only book that has ever really caught my attention was "Night" by Elie Weisel. This is an incredibly interesting book that tells of the Holocaust. Including the severe punishment and difficulties the Jews went through during the times that Hilter was in power. Even though the book speaks the truth of the horrific and terrible things people went through, it is so fascinating. It is unreal in a way but every moment of the book is true. The book is told through the eyes of Elie Weisel. It was like seeing the Holocaust right through his eyes. He was a teenager at the time and ended up to be one of the very few Holocaust survivors. Every moment of the literature was incredible due to everything was unbelievable. This is the one book I could read over and over. It will never get boring.
The best book I've ever read. Hmmm. That's a tough one. I'm not really known to read too many books only for book reports r other assignments. The best book in my opinion would have to be "Heart of a Champion". I read this book a while ago so I do not remember the author. This books was still good though because the book really related to my life it seemed. It was probably one the only books that I could honestly say that I enjoyed reading.
I think Nichole's book that she read i would ennjoy. I think this beacuse of my past experience with relationships. The things iv'e gone through with ********* guys. Something like that might open my eyes and make me realize that i need to stop being stupid and falling for cute comments.
I think the books Giacinto talks about i have a good chance of enjoying. Something interesting like those books would totally attract my attention. Since Giacinto just yelled to me in the middle of class saying "BRYANNA YOU HATE TO READ"?!. I tam going to give his books a chance
I think Emily's book would be an interesting read, I don't if I'm interested in the book itself or the way she described it but she made it seem like a good read.
I'm actually considering picking up Alison's book, "Winkie" because that sounds not only hilarious but philosophically deep. I love comedy with a nice moral at the end, and generally Alison has a taste similar to mine and I'm sure I'd enjoy the book.
Giacinto's suggestion the Kingdom Keeper series sounds interesting because it reminds me a bit of the Kingdom hearts video game series, which happens to be one of my favorite video games of all time, it is also a Disney related franchise, combining the Final Fantasy series of games and several Disney films as worlds. The book sounds like a fun adventure story, which I love to the core.
